Invisible Children promotes the equality of all human life. They use what they call the Fourth Estate. Protection is simply one of those components along with media, mobilization, and recovery. Protection initiatives include protecting local communities from Joseph Kony and the LRA attacks as well as to encourage the LRA to surrender and retreat peacefully. The main problem and challenge in protecting these regions in Africa from the atrocities of the LRA is that the communities are extremely isolated and lack much infrastructure. The Invisible Children protection wing uses a very hands on, participatory approach by having them identify where they need help and how they can go about solving these problems. They teach the inhabitants of these communities to be very independent and self
sufficient. Early Warning Radio Network is a series of high frequency radios that feed into a central hub and combines with all the security information. This is then released to all communities through the LRA Crisis Tracker. The LRA Tracker is a real time website that plots where the attackers are, where they have been attacking, and where their victims are moving. This website is the first to update in real-time what is occurring in a war-zone thousands of miles away. Invisible Children uses defection fliers to encourage the LRA to surrender. These fliers are distributed and hung along known LRA routes Through the use of FM Radios, the Invisible Children Protection wing can reach the LRA directly. In order to broaden their reach, Invisible Children built taller towers to reach more locations of the LRA as well as far away communities. The Invisible Children Protection wing is highly focused on leaving the communities self sufficient once they leave. They want to ensure that the people of the communities can run these protection activities for other communities as well as themselves independently. |
